On 24th August 2018, the International Trade Department, under Ministry of Industry and Commerce organized a competition advocacy workshop for line ministries and private sector. The workshop was chaired by Mr. Somchith Inthamith, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Industry and Commerce, who also supervises the operation of the International Trade Department.  There were over 150 representatives from the public and private sector attended the workshop, including Industry and Commerce Departments at the center and provincial level, business associations and business units within Vientiane Capital.

The workshop began with the progress of the competition in Lao PDR, presented by representatives of the International Trade Department. The presentation highlighted some main features of the Law on Competition, and the progress of the establishment of the Lao Competition Commission (LCC), the LCC Secretariat, and case handing procedure for violation.  Following by some lessons learned from the process of enforcing the Law on Competition, presented by a competition expert from South Korea – Mr. Won Joon Kim. Then, the workshop proceeded in discussions, exchanging knowledge and experience on the aforementioned topics and others related to the competition.

The Competition Advocacy Workshop is essential in enforcing the Law on Competition of Lao PDR, which was issued in 2015, in order to give better understanding and encourage an appropriate implementation of the society.  Moreover, this workshop has advocated competition in Lao PDR and expanded the knowledge of all participants on competition. The workshop was supported by the Second Trade Development Facility (TDF-II), TDF-II is a multi-donor trust fund, which co-financed by Australia, the European Union, Germany, Ireland, the United States and the World Bank.
