Introduction:

Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) has made significant progress in recent years in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment. However, despite these achievements, challenges persist, particularly in the business sector. To commemorate Lao National Women’s Day in 2023, we propose organizing a half-day public event in Vientiane that celebrates Lao businesswomen and aims to raise awareness about importance of promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment for the post-pandemic recovery, advancement toward graduation and sustainable development.

Objective:

The primary objective of this public event is to promote awareness of gender equality and women’s empowerment, with a specific focus on highlighting the achievements and contributions of Lao businesswomen. By showcasing successful women entrepreneurs and professionals, we aim to inspire and empower other women, as well as the wider community, to support and actively participate in advancing gender equality in the business sector. It will be another opportunity to share the results of the Gender study 2021 – perhaps with some updated figures (e.g., BAF2).

Proposed Activities:

Opening Ceremony: The event will commence with an official opening ceremony, featuring prominent speakers from Government, civil society, international organizations, and the private sector. This session will set the tone for the event, emphasizing the importance of gender equality in business and women’s empowerment in Lao PDR.

Panel Discussion: Engaging moderated panel discussion will be organized to provide a platform for 3-4 Lao businesswomen to share their experiences, challenges, and success stories. Topics (sectors) may include entrepreneurship, leadership, access to finance, and overcoming gender barriers in the business world in particular as part of post-pandemic recovery. These sessions will foster dialogue and exchange of ideas, encouraging participants to actively participate and ask questions.

Inspirational Talk by an International Guest: Esteemed guest speaker from Thailand will deliver motivational talks (a la TED talks) to inspire and empower participants. Her personal journeys and achievements will serve as a source of inspiration, highlighting the endless possibilities and potential for women in the business world.

Target participants: 250 (from Lao Women Entrepreneurs’ Association, LNCCI, foreign chambers and embassies, university students (Faculty of economic and business management), LCTP’s Implementing Agencies, LCT’s project beneficiary and other AFT projects, media, international organizations, and others)

Summary:

By organizing a half-day public event celebrating Lao businesswomen to mark the Lao National Women’s Day, we aim to create a platform for dialogue, inspiration, and networking. The event will promote awareness of gender equality and women’s empowerment, fostering a supportive environment for women in the business sector. Through panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, and inspirational talks, we hope to inspire participants to take proactive steps towards achieving gender equality in the business world and empowering women to unleash their full potential in Lao PDR.
