Vientiane, 14 December 2023 – In recognition of the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women and Children, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MOIC) in cooperation with the Lao Women Entrepreneurs’ Association hosted a women’s economic empowerment public event titled “Bridging the Gap: Men Championing Gender Equality”. This is the second panel discussion of the series of women’s economic empowerment events to highlight the importance of men’s role in bridging the gender gap.

The half-day event is an important step to engage men in the dialogue on gender equality and emphasize their crucial role in promoting women’s economic empowerment. By showcasing recognized male figures in business, sport, academia, entertainment, or government who are positive gender role models, the event also aims to inspire and empower other men, as well as the wider community, to support and actively participate in advancing gender equality in all strata of society.

The event coincided with the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, running from November 25th to December 10th. This second public event underscores the crucial role men play in ending violence against women and girls and highlights the importance of continuous efforts by all stakeholders. Additionally, the event also showcases the Lao Competitiveness and Trade Project’s achievements in supporting the national strategy for gender mainstreaming.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Manothong Vongsay, MOIC Deputy Minister emphasized that “Today’s event focuses on the role of male and boys in promoting gender equality and women economic empowerment and we need to ensure women’s full participation and decision making in business and economic activities can be leveraged to deliver transformative impact in society across the country and to achieve the SDGs. This year’s theme, “Bridging the Gap: Men Championing Gender Equality,” is particularly important. We recognize that the fight against violence against women and girls cannot be won without the active participation of men”.
While talking about the important role of men in promoting gender equality and preventing violence, Mrs. Chanthachone Vongxay, President of Lao Businesswomen’s Association said that “Gender inequality cannot and should not be addressed by women and girls only. Men and boys play a crucial role in eradicating gender inequality by actively challenging and dismantling patriarchal systems and behaviors that perpetuate gender-based discrimination and violence against women and girls. I also commend the Lao PDR Competitiveness and Trade for its commitment to women’s economic empowerment and gender equality”.

The panel discussion was moderated by Mr. Inpanh Borihan, a Freelance MC and moderator who was able to spotlight the contribution of the six speakers from different sectors including tourism, agriculture, IT and handicraft.
